Operation Smile China Medical Mission, Ltd. (OSCMM) volunteers repair childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families in China.
OSCMM is part of a global alliance of Operation Smile foundations and chapters dedicated to providing free treatment to children suffering from cleft lips and cleft palates.
- To provide free reconstructive surgery for underprivileged children in China with congenital facial and other deformities.
- To further training of healthcare professionals through medical exchanges by partnering with leading medical teaching institutions.
- To support medical education programs advancing medical and hygiene. standards in China.
- To obtain support from China and overseas for OSCMM’s programs in China.
In May 1991, the volunteer organization, Operation Smile, Inc., conducted its first medical mission to Hangzhou, China, where, in cooperation with Municipal Plastic Hospital of Hangzhou, volunteers performed reconstructive surgery on more than 150 children suffering from cleft lips, cleft palates and burns. In October of the same year, Operation Smile China Medical Mission, Ltd. (OSCMM) was founded in Hong Kong to organize and fund medical programs in China.
Since then, OSCMM has completed more than 51 medical missions in the cities throughout China, including Beijing (北京), Dujiangyan(都江堰), Hangzhou(杭州), Harbin(哈爾濱), Kunming(昆明), Lanzhou(蘭州), Lincang(臨滄), Linxia (臨夏), Linyi (臨沂), Meizhou (梅州), Nanchang (南昌), Nanjing (南京), Nujiang (怒江), Qingdao (青島), Shantou (山頭), Suqian(宿遷), Urumqi (烏魯木齊), Weixin (威信), Wuhan (武漢), Xian (西安), Zhaoqing (肇慶), Zhengzhou(鄭州) and Zhongshan(中山). To date, OSCMM has performed free reconstructive surgery in China for more than 8,500 children.
OSCMM donates state-of-the-art medical equipment to hospitals in China and annually sponsors two Chinese doctors to attend a medical training program in the United States.
OSCMM not only helps needy children to restore their self-confidence and self-esteem, it also provides an opportunity for medical professionals from around the world to share their diverse cultures and professional experiences.
